What is a vial?

Bottles are one of the most popular types of packaging. They are used for packaging liquids, pasty and granular products, both in the food industry and in technical and pharmaceutical production. Such popularity is due to the practicality of the packaging. So, what is a bottle? It is a small vial originally designed for perfumery. It provides tightness, protects the contents from leakage and evaporation of odors, and prevents air from entering.

When bottles appeared

The first mentions and examples of such packaging are known from ancient times. Even in Ancient Rome and Egypt, small vials were used for essential oils. But bottles became more widely used in the 18th century in Europe. Then bottles with exquisite designs began to appear. They were made of glass and porcelain. 

Mass use of such packaging began only in the mid-20th century. It was then that the production of plastic bottles began – practical, durable, and affordable. The transition from fragile glass to polymers ensured industrial safety and optimized logistics processes on a global scale. 

Features of bottle purposes

The main function of plastic packaging is to protect the contents from microorganisms, oxidation, and UV exposure. PET bottles have a number of important properties that ensure the preservation of formulations:

• chemical inertness;
• tightness;
• ease and convenience of use.

In addition, they are produced with different neck diameters, so different closure systems can be selected for them: plastic caps, dispensers, sprayers.

Types of bottles

Plastic packaging is produced with different types of necks and is used for various dosing methods. These parameters determine its use depending on the viscosity of the formulations for bottling. Several main types can be distinguished:

• ✅ cosmetic containers for lotions, emulsions;
• ✅ tamper-evident – used for household chemicals;
• ✅ small-volume bottles with threaded necks.

The popularity of plastic packaging made of polyethylene terephthalate is due to its practicality. It is characterized by:

Also, plastic bottles help optimize bottling processes in production. They do not break upon collision or falling, ensure tightness, are produced in different volumes, and are more affordable compared to glass vials.
