Polyethylene terephthalate for making bottles

Plastic is the leader among bottle materials. Among the variety of polymer compounds, polyethylene terephthalate turned out to be the most popular. PET containers are filled with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, water, milk, oils, sauces and ketchups. It is a material safe for humans with excellent consumer properties.

What is PET

The abbreviation "PET" denotes a semi-crystalline polyester that melts when heated. Complex polyester is also called PET – polyethylene terephthalate. It is one of the safe plastics that is often used to make food bottles and eggplants. The basis of the material is fossil fuel. PET material is obtained by processing gas condensate and oil.

Material characteristics

Wide use of plastic containers determined the following properties of plastic:

  • ✅ strength and rigidity - not subject to deformation;
  • ✅ high wear resistance;
  • ✅ up to 80% transparency;
  • ✅ lightweight;
  • ✅ easy to polish;
  • ✅ chemical resistance;
  • ✅ low friction;
  • ✅ high electrical insulating value.

Polyethylene terephthalate is resistant to gasoline, alcohols, ethers, fats, mineral salts and many organic compounds. Diluted acids and alkalis are also not afraid of plastic.

PET analogues

Polyesters with PET-like properties:

  1. ✅ PCT – crystalline polycyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate. The melting of the material occurs at a temperature of 281 – 287°C, glassmaking – at 69 – 98°C
  2. ✅ PCTA – amorphous or crystalline copolyester (polycyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate acid). Melting occurs at 279 – 281°C, glassmaking – at 88 – 98°C
  3. ✅ PETG – amorphous polyethylene terephthalate glycol. Glassmaking takes place at 80°C.
  4. ✅ PCTG – amorphous copolyether (polycyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate glycol). Melts at 222 – 225°C, glass melting temperature – 82 – 84°C
  5. ✅ PEN – crystalline polyethylene naphthalate. The melting of the material occurs at 270°C, glass melting – at 120°C.
  6. ✅ PTT – crystalline polytrimethylene terephthalate. Plastic melts at 225 – 228°C, glassmaking – at 45 – 75°C.

Advantages of PET containers

The main advantages of polyethylene terephthalate bottles:

  1. ✅ Leakproof. The material is moisture resistant and waterproof, it will reliably protect the contents of the container from getting something from the outside.

  2. ✅ Convenience. PET packaging is light, does not break during transportation.

  3. ✅ Products are resistant to cracking, deformation, impact.

  4. ✅ A variety of plastic containers. You can choose bottles of different configurations and colors to accommodate both small and large volumes of liquid.

  5. ✅ Security. PET plastic does not emit toxic substances and unpleasant odors under the conditions of transportation and storage. Bottles should not be heated above 25°C.

  6. ✅ Reusable. If for food products such containers can be reused after thorough cleaning and in compliance with the requirements for the temperature regime, then there are no restrictions for domestic needs.

  7. ✅ The production process does not harm the environment.

  8. ✅ PET bottles are successfully recycled.

At Preform Factory you can order preforms for polyethylene terephthalate bottles, as well as PET caps and PET handles for bottles. A wide range of items includes plastic blanks for the production of containers with a volume of 0.5 l to 10 l of different colors, thicknesses and configurations (standard, shortened, thick-walled).
